The Sunday Times School of the Year

Dartford Grammar School has been recognised as the 'Sunday Times (IB) School of the Year'. This coveted and prestigious national award recognises the school’s ground-breaking work in championing The International Baccalaureate Diploma in its highly successful sixth form (currently comprising 580 students, all of whom study for the Diploma).

The International Baccalaureate Diploma does much, much more than other qualifications to help our young people to grow and flourish – intellectually, personally, socially, morally and internationally.  It emphasises that our future lies in dealing with the wider world, and in promoting international understanding and peace. The excellence and coherence of the IB Diploma is the fundamental reason for our students’ exceptional success at gaining university places at first-class universities, 70% at Russell Group universities in 2016. Universities are going out of their way to recruit IB Diploma students. We are surprised that even more schools do not yet offer the IB Diploma and it is a real shame that more young people cannot benefit from this outstanding full time sixth form education.

The IB is the centre of Dartford Grammar School’s curriculum, where each student – from Year 7 to Year 13 – pursues a broad and balanced curriculum, including English, at least one further language, mathematics, all three sciences and at least one humanity.

Service, art, music, drama and sport are important to this vision of nurturing the whole person. It is no accident that our students’ conspicuous success in these areas too relies on the coherence of the IB vision: Dartford Grammar School is committed to educating the whole person and guiding its students to take a full, thoughtful and compassionate part in the world. Dartford Grammar School is indeed “a learning community developing international students” and “develops inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect”.

Well done to all of our students, staff and parents for their enduring efforts to make Dartford Grammar School the Sunday Times School of the Year.
