Vision funds were used to install a bird box in a protected part of the school with CCTV linked to the School's network. We installed the box on Monday 18th March and less than 24 hours later Myrtle and Buckbeak had moved in!
We followed the progress of nature through the nest building, the laying of 6 eggs, their hatching, and then, cruelly, the demise of the hatchlings. The full story was tracked on twitter @DGSSciCollege and is on that feed for posterity.
There is a view that this was the couple's first productive year, and that ultimately Myrtle needed more help from Buckbeak to feed and rear the chicks. For those of us who watched the story unfold, the outcome was obviously not what we had hoped for and serves as a reminder that not all of nature has a Disney ending. We do hope they'll be back next year!
