DGS students earn Flight Status aboard the International Space Station

We are thrilled to announce a remarkable achievement by three teams of year 12 students who have earned FLIGHT STATUS in the prestigious Astro Pi Mission Space Lab program, run by the European Space Agency (ESA) in collaboration with the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

Their Python-coded experiments have been selected to run aboard the International Space Station (ISS) between April and May 2025! From writing code from scratch to designing experiments that capture live data from space, their journey reflects outstanding teamwork, critical thinking, and real-world application of computing.

Achieving flight status is an incredibly competitive milestone – a testament to the creativity, dedication, and technical skill our students have demonstrated. They will receive the data recorded from space and official ESA certificates this June.

As a special recognition, ESA has sent a video message from one of their project astronauts congratulating our students – a truly inspiring moment for everyone involved.

All the students are KS5(Year 12 students) and this project was undertaken as part of their CAS activities.
