DGS win Lee Valley Athletics
October saw the start of the Indoor Athletics season for the Years 10 and 11. The team travelled to Lee Valley for the keenly contested Indoor Cup competition: with the East and South East being acknowledged as the strongest regions nationally this competition is exceptionally tough as the final might typically include 5 or 6 national finalists.
In the 1st round there were some good performances from our boys, the most notable being Pablo Seema Roca’s new Championship Best Performance in the 800m - his time of 2:02.51s took a full 2 seconds off the previous mark. A string of good performances put the A and B teams in 1st and 3rd place respectively, and both qualified for the final. We knew the final would be tough as we faced a strong Woodlands team.
The final took place the following week and started well with David Udeagbara setting a new Year 11 60m record clocking 7.26s. He was followed by a number of the squad who also set new records:
Fidunu Abidekun, Year 10, 200m: 24.46s
Daniel Pedro, Year 10, 300m: 38.19s
Levi Onipede, Year 10, Shot: 12.25m
Neil Akinyemi, Year 11, Shot :12.23m
The competition was very close going into the final event the 4 x 200m. Our team led the race for much of the distance but was annoyingly pipped on the line by Woodlands. However, despite this, the team had done enough and claimed coveted Lee Valley Indoor Cup title!
Congratulations to the boys who should be rightly recognised as athletes among the best in the country, and of course a thank you to the staff who give up their time to train and accompany the team to such events.
