Japanese students visit Pembroke College, Oxford University

We were delighted to run a trip for 10JEP and Year 12 students of Japanese to Oxford University on Friday 25th February, after having to replace it with online workshops last year. Mrs Simpson, Mrs Hyland and Miss Tasker accompanied the trip with 50 students, which was expertly organised by Hannah Kentridge of Pembroke College.

Students received talks on ‘The Portrayal of the Yakuza in Japanese Video Games’ and ‘Year Abroad in Kobe’ by DGS alumni Matthew Chow, and undergraduate Japanese student Jessica Hindle. This was followed by a ‘Networking’ opportunity and soft drinks with current students of Japanese at Pembroke College, and lunch in the grand halls.

We took in the sights of Oxford and the Bodleian Library in the afternoon and were lucky to have beautiful sunny weather. Our final sessions of the day were the highly engaging workshop on ‘Multimodal Iconicity in Manga’ by Dr Mann, and the interactive translation workshop lead by Nishizawa Sensei and 10 undergraduate students which culminated in a freeze frame performance of scenes from the story.

We are grateful to all involved who made this trip a possibility again this year!
