Juniors and Intermediates both win (again) at English Schools Athletics finals

On Saturday 4th July both the Junior and Intermediate athletics teams took part in the English Schools Cup Track and Field Finals in Chelmsford. We are delighted and proud to say both teams won and retained their National Titles, which is now 4 in a row for the Junior team and 3 in a row for the Intermediates! The Juniors set a new national record in the process of 627 points, which ties in nicely with the record that the Intermediates already hold of 629 points.

There were some amazing performances on the day, notably Emmanuel Famokun who set a new Cup Final Record with a long jump of 6.13m.

Additionally, Samar Plaha also set a Cup Final Record with a huge throw in the discus of 52.64m. This beat the previous best by 9 metres.

The intermediates had a tough start to the day but their resilience and determination ensured they would be tough to beat. Olufikayo Lana had a fantastic day, top scoring for the Inters with personal bests in the 300m (36.9s) and the Discus (43.08m). They had to get the relay baton round safely to have a chance of winning.

In the 45 year history of the competition, 600 points has been achieved 11 times by teams. It is a rare achievement.... 9 of those performances have been from DGS teams!

Congratulations to the athletes on this quite remarkable set of results, and as ever we are deeply grateful to the staff who give up their time not only to train the boys, but to accompany them to all the meets that lead up to the finals.
