Year 7 students help Gravesham celebrate Chinese New Year
25 of our year 7 students who study Mandarin went along to Community Square, Gravesend, to join in the town's Chinese New Year celebrations on February 12th.
The celebrations started with a Lion awakening, a tradition where people dressed as a Chinese lion receive an offering of food such as lettuce leaves. The leaves are then scattered to symbolise a fresh start to the New Year. The event was organised by Gravesham Borough Council in partnership with the Ying Tao Organisation.
The photos show how Dartford Grammar School boys enjoyed their part in the celebrations. The Mayor of Gravesham, Cllr David Hurley said “It is said that the year of the pig celebrates the personality of those that will let themselves enjoy life and those that love entertainment. To me that pretty much sums up Gravesham. We love a celebration and certainly enjoy life so I hope that this ‘personality trait’ is carried on throughout the year.”
