Year 9 Games Console Repair Workshop

On Thursday 8th May, Year 9 took part in a workshop where they learned about repairing games consoles. This was part of the wider sustainability drive that the school is pursuing on many fronts - of course including our new solar panels and electric car-charging points that have recently been installed - and indicates just how much further we are now going to consider the environment than merely recycling paper and drinks cans!

Specifically, Dartford Grammar School was recently chosen to be part of the e-Waste Warriors project being delivered by Kent County Council using funding awarded through the Electrical Recycling Innovation Fund by Material Focus, the not-for-profit organisation leading the Recycle Your Electricals campaign. The aim of the fund is to significantly reduce e-waste and its environmental impact by making it easier for consumers to recycle their electricals. As part of the project, we have the chance to participate in activities such as this repair workshop, as well as amnesty events and competitions with prizes for schools that recycle the most (in weight) and repair the most electrical items.

Students and staff have been invited in broken and/or reusable small electricals (smaller than microwave in size) and once collected, repaired or reusable electrical items will be donated to local charities or sold in the shop at the local Household Waste Recycling Centre with profits donated to local charities. (Anything that can’t be repaired will of course be recycled safely and discarded appropriately.)
