SEND and Inclusion
At Dartford Grammar School, we adopt a person-centred approach to the inclusion and support of students with special educational needs or disabilities, and we are committed to all students having access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. We ensure that the educational needs of students are identified and addressed through an early diagnosis of learning needs. This information is used to shape the curriculum, academic and pastoral planning for each student. We welcome the support and involvement of parents/carers in the process of identification, assessment and decisions for meeting the needs of their children.
Our Student Services Centre is a dedicated base in the school for support provision, and is well equipped with private working spaces, a sensory room and a meeting room. It is a hub that students feel safe in, and can be utilised in many ways to best support the specific needs of our individual students.
Students’ needs are considered on an individual basis, but may include:
- Specific Learning Difficulties
- Health issues
- Hearing impairment
- Visual impairment
- Students on the Autistic Spectrum
- Social, emotional and mental health issues
- Students where English is an additional language
All teachers and support staff receive regular training on Quality First Teaching, the graduated approach, and specific direction from the learning support team as necessary, with the collective aim of ensuring progress for all. The SEND department works in partnership with outside agencies, including the specialist teaching service, disability services, speech and language services and CAMHS.
